ARCTIC ODYSSEY
Canadian Museum of Nature - Ottawa, ON
opened 1997

A view of the arctic through the eyes of scientists, the Inuit, and some of the animals.

The 10,000 square foot Canadian Museum of Nature exhibit Arctic Odyssey included electronic and hands-on interactive exhibits as well as life size dioramas featuring a family of musk ox specimens, a display of live lemmings, the incorporation of a polar bear travelling exhibit, a 200 gallon cold water tank for arctic marine life and fish, and life size cast models of a Beluga and a Narwhal. Oulton & Devine provided technical drawings for all components of the exhibit and artistic direction for the graphic design.

O&D designed the exhibit to give the visitor a sense of the expanse of the Arctic environment. Open dioramas, tactile displays and sound scapes provided an immersive experience throughout the exhibit.

During the course of the project, the museum was required to reduce the budget to 1/3 of the original. O&D successfully revised the developed space plan and final design concept to suit 1/3 of the original budget without compromising the overall experience.
